What to Know Before You Drive in Cyprus

• Traffic drives on the left in Cyprus, the same as in the UK, Ireland and Malta. If you normally drive on the right, give yourself time to adjust in safe driving areas like parking lots. Most visitors adapt quickly, but the first roundabout is where things can go wrong. Stay left and you will be fine.

• Speed limits are 50 km/h in built-up areas, 80 km/h on rural roads and 100 km/h on motorways. Speed cameras operate across the island and are strictly enforced. Fines are taken from your deposit, usually with a handling fee added.

• You need a valid driving licence from your home country. An International Driving Permit (IDP) is strongly recommended and required by some suppliers, particularly for licences not printed in Latin script. Arrange one before you travel as it cannot be obtained on the island.

• The minimum rental age is 21 for most vehicles. For 4WDs, SUVs and premium cars, the minimum is often 25. Young driver surcharges may apply and are shown on each listing.

• Vehicles come with a full tank. Return it full to avoid refuelling charges. When heading into the mountains or more remote areas, fill up before you leave the main roads, as stations can be limited.
